My Approach
Research is clear: the most important aspect of therapy in determining the likelihood of clients reaching their goals is the therapeutic relationship. If you do not feel like you are beginning to trust me after 2 or 3 sessions, I will help you find another therapist.
That being said, I work hard to earn your trust so that you feel comfortable sharing all parts of yourself. This is something that I am naturally gifted at. I create a unique non-judgmental space where you feel safe to talk about even the hardest things.
I am extensively trained in Restoration Therapy and that is typically my go-to theory for the work I do. As a Marriage and Family therapist, we were also taught to see clients as part of family systems and to see the patterns clients have in relating to others.
I am also trained in EMDR (which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It is an evidenced based treatment for trauma and PTSD.
I encourage clients to participate in every part of the planning of therapy, including goals setting, establishing a timeline, and deciding which strategies to use. You will be an active part of the process.
I will laugh with you, maybe even cry with you. I will help you to see the truth about who you are, your worth, and your identity. I will sit in the pit with you and help lead you out. You don't have to be alone in your jouney. I'd consider it an honor if you let me walk with you for this season, rewrite some of your story, and propel you toward your next chapter.
Most of all, I instill hope in my clients that things can and will get better.
These lyrics from the song Bread and Wine by Josh Garrels align with the way that I view my work:
"A man’s so prone to doubt
Faithful are the wounds of friends
So give it just a little time
Share some bread and wine
Weave your heart into mine
My friend
Walls fall down where there’s a peaceful sound
Lonely souls hang around
Don’t be shy, there’s nothing left to hide
Come on let’s talk a while
Of the places we left behind
No longer yours and mine
But we could build a good thing here too
And if I fall, I fall alone
But two can help to bear the load
A threefold cord is hard to break
And all I have I give to you
If you will share your sorrows too
Then joy will be the crown upon our heads
My friend"
